Are office chair cylinders universal?

Most office chair cylinders come in a standard size of 5 inches. However, there is a possibility that they could range between 4 and 10 inches. This will all depend on the type of office chair you have. In most situations, if you a bought a standard office chair it will have a 5-inch cylinder.

These cylinders are compatible with nearly every standard office chair sold in the US and Canada.  This cylinder will consist of an outer and an inner layer. The inner layer is 1.1 inches surrounded by an outer layer that’s 2 inches. A cylinder less than 5 inches would not fit, and anything larger would be too big.

When you purchase an office chair, it’s always important to review the user manual. Some manufacturers will send a replacement cylinder if the one in your chair isn’t working properly. This could happen if your office chair is stuck in one position and you are unable to raise or lower it.

Why do office chair cylinders need to be replaced?

You may need to replace your office chair cylinder if it gets damaged or isn’t working properly. However, some people also like to change their office chair if it’s too low or too high. Every person needs their chair set at a different height for the right ergonomics. This ensures you are comfortable and in the right position.

Sitting at the right height in your office chair also prevents back pain, wrist fatigue, carpal tunnel, and other problem. If your office chair isn’t at the proper height for you then you could end up suffering from some of these issues. One of the easiest ways to get your office chair at the right height is to replace the chair cylinder with one that can rise higher.

When your office chair’s cylinder gets damaged, it can no longer manage the pressure when you sit down on it. This causes it to sink or get stuck in one position. In the event that your chair’s cylinder gets damaged, it’s crucial to get it replaced as soon as possible. This will prevent you from having to stretch and strain your arms while working.

How to choose the right cylinder for your office chair?

Choosing the right size of the cylinder for your height range can make a big difference for your comfort level while you work. However, you may not know which cylinder is the best size for raising your office chair. Ideally, you should be sitting at a height where your feet are comfortably touching the ground and your knees are at a 90-degree angle.

It’s also important that your wrists are level to the keyboard you are working with. In order to achieve this, your elbows should be bent to a 90 to 110-degree angle. When your forearms are parallel to your keyboard, you’re more likely to avoid the risk of wrist-related injuries.

How to replace an office chair cylinder

When you need to replace your office chair cylinder, you won’t have to take it into the store for help. This is a very easy process that you should be able to do on your own.

  1. The first thing you need to do is remove the old cylinder. Flip your office chair over so it’s either upside down or on its side. This will make it easier for you to see what you’re working with.
  2. Using a rubber mallet or a hammer, gently tap the base of the chair with one hand while holding the cylinder with your other hand. Tap it enough times until you are able to remove the base from the cylinder.
  3. Next, secure a wrench towards the top of the cylinder towards the seat of the chair. Start twisting until the cylinder starts to release from the mechanism attaching it to the seat. If the cylinder is stuck in the mechanism, spray some WD40 and allow it to sit for a few minutes.
  4. Once you have removed the old cylinder, you can replace it with the new one. This is really simple. Start by popping it into the base of the chair.
  5. Next, lift the base and cylinder into the mechanism to attach it to the seat. Once it’s in place, carefully turn the chair back to the upright position.
  6. Take a seat and adjust the office chair to your ideal height.

Final thoughts-

The standard office chair in North American has a 5-inch cylinder. Any standard office chair purchased in the US or Canada will most likely fit a standard office chair cylinder. However, a specialty office chair may have a cylinder that is slightly smaller or larger.

If you want to replace the cylinder in your office chair, you can buy a universal cylinder and perform the task yourself. This will help you get the ideal height for your office chair so you’re always comfortable working. It will also help a damaged office chair that is stuck in one height move up and down again.

About Michael York

My name is Michael York and I spend quite a lot of time sitting due to the nature of my job. Some time ago I came across an ergonomic chair that my mother had at her work, tried it and fell in love with it (it is Herman Miller's Aeron). I created this website to express my opinion on Office Stuff and help people make an informed decision before they buy Office Supplies.

Because there are so many scams and non-genuine products on the internet nowadays, it's really difficult to know what actually works. In fact, when I came across, I was skeptical myself.

I’ve cut through all the hype and revealed the facts that will help you decide whether certain Office Chair is right for you or not.
